Makino: We're still not satisfied. Going into the Round of 16 is the lowest acceptable result

Urawa’s draw with Sydney FC overnight means the Reds have qualified for the Knockout Stage. The Saitama club were winners of the Asian Champions League in 2007 but since then they’ve made the Knockout Stage just once in three attempts. For a club with Urawa’s reputation, last night’s result would have provided some relief.

The draw last night was one that many may have predicted, but both teams weren’t without their chances despite an awful playing surface. Sydney FC’s George Blackwood had a quality game with the only downside being the lack of a goal. The 18 year old dribbled his way into the box on separate occasions and looked a threat anytime he was given time or space.

The Reds however, dictated for most of the match, their high line keeping Sydney camped inside their own defensive third for significant periods. By the second half though Urawa were resorting to crosses rather than looking to find a way through the well organised Sky Blues defence.

Unsurprisingly both teams were happy to take the one point, with Sydney FC allowing Urawa goalkeeper Nishikawa plenty of time on the ball in injury time, and the Reds then resorting to shepherding the ball in the corner.

The 0-0 draw means Sydney FC head to China with their two point advantage intact. Though the Sky Blues will face a Guangzhou Evergrande outfit likely bent on revenge. It’s hard to see them taking the three points there, meanwhile the Reds host struggling Pohang. As stated previously the prize for winning Group H is the opportunity to avoid red hot FC Seoul. Even though the Knockout Stage contestants have been decided already, Match Day 6 still has plenty of interest.

Asked about the team’s qualification for the ACL Knockout Stage Urawa defender Tomoaki Makino said, “Last year’s result changed this team a lot. This year we had an aim to come back and make it into the Round of 16.”

The fullback (playing centre back last night) then stated, “We’re still not satisfied. Going into the Round of 16 is the lowest acceptable result.”

Makino was then probed on a preferred opponent in the Round of 16 but he wasn’t giving anything away.

Heading into Match Day 6 the equation is like so: If Urawa wins (v Pohang) and Sydney FC loses (at Guangzhou Evergrande), the Reds will play Group F’s second placed team Shandong Luneng. If Sydney FC get a draw against Guangzhou Evergrande and Urawa wins, the Reds will still win the group.

For now the Reds return to the J-League and meet table topping Kawasaki on Sunday. Meanwhile, Sydney FC have two week to rest up before their date with Guangzhou Evergrande.

  1. Very very nice template!! But I have a problem. I try to insert the link of an image that I have in Picasa but it doesn't work. Do you have an idea?My blog is: malgtpsisters.bkoespou.com

  5. Sooooo… are ‘gangs’ just a thing the media has created in an attempt to instill fear into the public or just to get a good story or are we just classifying these young people who are ‘at risk’ to sort of separate them from the community instead of taking correct action??? Because to me, it’s a huge tug-of-war between these youth and the rest of whoever may be involved.

  6. It’s amazing to me that Moet & Chandon has been alive with the same family in Epernay since 1743. If I remember correctly, Moet and the Cliquot Ponsardin houses were the only two names in the 18th century. Competitors. Funny, even though Moet Hennessey is a gargantuan, diversified company and it even owns Veuve Cliquot today, Moet and Veuve still are competitors, in a way.

  7. I agree with you about the Prosperity Gospel people, but I think it’s important to make distinctions between people like Joel Osteen and, say, the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The people who built the great houses of worship knew that they weren’t building something they themselves would be around to enjoy; they were a trust for future generations of worshipers, whereas Creflo Dollar is pretty much just in it for Creflo Dollar.

  8. If my memory serves me correct, I believe that way back when, I sorta liked Solyndra and I beleive that this green energy auto was backed by Mr.Obma's governmental indications. Fortunately, I did not go for it and am now very happy with my Honda. Charlieboy.

  11. Have you or Jeff checked with the Lost Dogs of Wisconsin organization? My mother-in-laws spaniel ran away from the dog sitter’s last November while she and her husband were out of town visiting my brother-in-law. She’s been working with that group and they have amazing stories of reuniting dogs with their owners, months later in some cases.

  12. I found my way to this recipe in a search for a corn and sausage chowder recipe to replicate one I recently ate at a favorite restaurant. Your recipe was very different from the one I was going for, but extremely delicious!! I heated and broke up several links of breakfast sausage (without casings) and added it with the potatoes at the end, and it was fantastic. I’ll be adding this recipe to my arsenal of favorites.

  13. RCC:No, sorry. “Keeping up with the Joneses” refers to the next door neighbors of Marion Jones. It is well-known that Ms. Jones is fast, but it is less well-known that her entire family is quite speedy, as well.“Keeping upwith the Joneses” == rapid movement intendted to outpace any individual propelled by illegal or illicit performance-enhancing substances. And that’s a fact. – Rate this comment: 0  0

  15. My Muslim friend supported Jaffer and worked on his campaign. I heard nothing about some movement to unseat him.At what point are they going to accept that most of the people in this riding simply do not like him, and did not find a candidate they were certain could defeat him until Linda Duncan came along?
