SWQ Thunder 0-1 Olympic FC, Toowoomba, 30 July.

Olympic have been on the charge over the last few months, with eight wins and a draw in their last ten games. They took on a SWQ Thunder side who have picked up just one point from their last seven games. Olympic nearly got the perfect start, as Ramone Close had his shot from 30 yards palmed onto the crossbar, while Liam O’Bryan shot narrowly wide from close range. Olympic made a double substitution early in the second half, and it paid immediate dividends. Ramone Close managed to poke the ball home from 6 yards after a corner and a Kristen Waters deflection to give Olympic the lead on 58 minutes. That goal would prove enough for Olympic to win and move into a finals spot.

Northern Fury 1-3 Brisbane Roar Youth, Townsville, 30 July.

Brisbane Roar have fallen out of form recently, with just one point from their last four games. They travelled to Townsville to take on last-placed Northern Fury, eager to pick up a win for the first time this season. It wasn’t a great start for the Fury, as Nicholas Panetta finished a Dane Ingham low ball from 12 yards to give the Roar a lead on just 2 minutes. Ingham tried to go one better and score himself, but his shot from 12 yards bounced away off the post. Darren Walker would draw the Fury level on 40 minutes when his header from six yards after a corner found the back of the net. Jesse Daley restored the Roar’s lead on 59 minutes as he latched onto a through ball and slotted past the goalkeeper from the edge of the area. Harrison Sawyer would wrap up the three points on 89 minutes, as he poked home a flick on to give Roar their third.

FNQ Heat 2-0 Redlands United, Innisfail, 30 July.

Coming off their FFA Cup defeat to Edgeworth Eagles, FNQ Heat turned their attention back to their league title charge. Their opponent was an out-of-sorts Redlands United, looking for some momentum ahead of their FFA Cup clash with A-League champions Adelaide United this coming week. Neither side managed to find the back of the net in the first half as the game was locked 0-0 at half time. Early in the second half, Kieran Sanders nearly broke the deadlock from 30 yards, but his long range strike cannoned off the crossbar. On 57 minutes though, it would be Crios O’Hare who opened the scoring for the Heat, capitalising on pinball action in the penalty area before tucking home from 12 yards. O’Hare and Bronson Koppen both had long range efforts fail to find the back of the net. On 85 minutes, Jamie Carroll capped off a great run through the defence to get the Heat a second goal and wrap up the scoring.

Moreton Bay United 1-0 Sunshine Coast Fire, Brisbane, 30 July.

A must win game for both sides finals chances, as anything but three points would make it effectively impossible for either side to make the finals. As the fog set in around Wolter Park, it was Moreton Bay United who got off to the better start. Ray Schultz got a low cross into the box which Finn Beakhurst hammered home from just six yards to give Moreton Bay the lead. Things went from bad to worse for the Fire, as Connor Hancock was sent off for a last man challenge on Finn Beakhurst; the Fire would have to play the last seventy minutes with ten men. Jordan Loy nearly pulled the Fire level, as a ball over the defence fell to him at the back post, before he pulled his shot narrowly wide. Early in the second half, Shoichi Koshimizu had his close range shot blocked by the legs of Matt Byrne. An unfortunate injury to Ray Schultz created a long delay in the second half, before Jordan Farina blasted a shot straight at Samuel Nickolls. Moments before full time, a Paul Brownlie header went narrowly wide from an Alexander Warrilow free kick. Moreton Bay run out 1-0 winners.

Gold Coast City 1-1 Brisbane City, Gold Coast, 31 July.

Gold Coast City’s clash with Brisbane City went a long way to determining the makeup of the top four. A win for Gold Coast City almost guarantees them a spot in the top four, while a win for Brisbane City keeps them above Olympic in fourth spot. It was Brisbane City who got the opener, as Jason Park poked home Nathan Bird’s layoff from very close range on 20 minutes. A pair of chances to Rhys Saunders from acute angles provided Gold Coast City their best route to goal, but neither went in and the score was 1-0 to Brisbane at half time. The results were a little bit different in the second half as Gold Coast City drew level on 55 minutes. Jason Campbell played an aerial through ball to Ben Litfin, who snuck past the Brisbane City defence and hit home from 12 yards. Gold Coast City would push to find a winner, but the scoreline remained 1-1.

Brisbane Strikers 1-0 Western Pride, Brisbane, 31 July.

Brisbane Strikers came off their 6-0 demolition of Shamrock Darwin Rovers in the FFA Cup midweek knowing they needed a win to keep touch with FNQ Heat at the top of the table. Standing in their way was the Western Pride, eager to play spoiler to their fellow South East Queensland side. Despite the Strikers goal glut in midweek, it seemed their luck in front of goal had deserted them in the first half. A series of Strikers shots were denied by Pride goalkeeper Bon Scott. The Strikers would end up finding their goal, however it took them until the 74thminute. Jonti Richter saw his shot cleared off the line, before Trent Clulow picked up the clearance and curled the ball into the top corner of the net. The result sees Brisbane Strikers and FNQ Heat separated by just one point ahead of their top of the table clash next weekend.
